High Impact Practices at Q.U.:

Reading: The Bridge to Everywhere

Thursday, March 7, 2013

12:30 - 1:45 PM

Mount Carmel Campus, Student Center 120

Presented by

Tracy Hallstead, Academic Specialist and Coordinator of the Peer Fellow Program, The Learning Center
&
Glenda Pritchett, Assistant Professor of English and
 Coordinator of First-Year Writing

We look to students’ writing as a marker of the expertise they have gained in their disciplines.  Yet writing and reading inform one another and are difficult to separate as discrete practices.  Indeed, writing and reading are interconnected as a “single act of literacy.”  Though effective reading is crucial for critical thinking within a discipline, many of our students face significant barriers to achieving the level of reading comprehension that builds expertise in their fields.  Our presentation tackles several barriers to reading success and draws on collaboration between professors and Learning Center professionals.  After sharing their own challenges, participants will have the opportunity to engage in problem-solving activities and storytelling that foster critical thinking and enhanced reading comprehension in their disciplines.

Please RSVP by March 4
