2021 Summer Course Design Institute

Presented by
Academic Technology & The Learning Commons

Quality Matters & Universal Course Design

The 2021 Course Design Institute will be hosted by Academic Technology, in collaboration with The Learning Commons. It will focus on our Quality Matters and Universal Course Design Initiative. It will take place over 3 successive ½ days and have three concurrent tracks. The half-day event tracks will be repeated over each of the three days in order for you to be able to attend each track. When registering, please indicate which track you wish to attend on each of the days. All of the sessions are designed to be interactive, encouraging you to ask questions, share insights with colleagues and receive individualized feedback during the sessions and through Blackboard.

Track 1: Content Presentation
This track focuses on design elements that support all student learning. We will explore how to design a course that provides multiple ways to present content to ensure students' academic success.  We will focus on course structure, communication and student support services in order to make courses easily accessible to students.

By the completion of this track, you should be able to:

  1. Develop an effective and clear course overview/introduction.
  2. Review the importance of using a variety of instructional materials .
  3. Provide equity in terms of access to and interacting with course content.
  4. Identify learner needs for access to institutional support services.

Track 2: Objectives & Assessment
This track focuses on design elements to provide learners a clear picture of what they should be able to demonstrate as a result of the learning  experience and how knowledge of course concepts will be assessed. Information and hands-on activities in this track will help instructors design a course that allows learners multiple ways to demonstrate mastery of course concepts.

By the completion of this track, you should be able to:

  1. Ensure your learning objectives express measurable outcomes/goals/skills that learners can demonstrate.
  2. Provide a balanced assessment plan for your course that offers diverse means for students to demonstrate their learning.
  3. Ensure your assessments align to your learning objectives.

Track 3: Course Engagement
This track focuses on design elements that offer diverse ways for learners to connect to content, other students, and the instructor. Multiple engagement opportunities, in a course, create a strong sense of community that helps keep students vested in the educational experience. Incorporating the use of multiple technologies can enhance a learner’s ability to successfully achieve the course objectives.

By the completion of this track, you should be able to:

  1. Examine how offering diverse ways for learners to connect to content, other students and the instructor will help enhance the learning experience.
  2. Identify the connection between engagement and a strong sense of community to help keep students vested in their educational experience.
  3. Describe how multiple technologies can enhance a learner’s ability to successfully achieve the course objectives.
